Financing Your International Adoption

We realize how expensive international adoption can be, so we want to help you learn about your adoption financing options. Perhaps you have questions such as:

How do I create an adoption financial plan?
What are the adoption fees?
How much does adoption cost?
Is any financial help available?
Are there adoption tax breaks?
How do I do fundraising for adoption?

For those who wish to adopt a foreign child but hesitate because of adoption expenses, we hope this information will be a bit of help.

The National Adoption Foundation
Grants ranging from $500 to $4,000 are available to prospective adoptive parents four times a year.

Bright Futures Adoption Assistance Foundation
The Bright Futures foundation helps orphans find forever families by providing small grants to prospective adoptive parents.

Gift of Adoption Fund
Grants ranging from $2,000 to $5,000 are available monthly to families adopting children with serious medical issues and for low-income families.

Ours by Grace
Christian families can be helped by Ours by Grace.

United Way International
The United Way can help with travel costs for children who are adopted and who are suffering from serious medical problems that need urgent medical attention.

Federal Employees Adoption Benefits
Information about non-cash adoption benefits for federal employees.

Military Benefits & Adoption Subsidy
If you are in military, you also can request an adoption grant or loan from your employer. Active full-time military personnel can be eligible for a one-time subsidy for adoption. Please note that reimbursement can be made if the adoption is facilitated by a state adoption agency or a private non-profit agency and only after the adoption is completed.

State Non-Recurring Expense Subsidy
See if your state of residence provides subsidies for special needs adoption from abroad. You can also ask your home study representative or a social worker about possible credits given by your state.

University Adoption Assistance
Learn more about the Harvard University Adoption Benefits Program. Adoption assistance is available for eligible university employees, and your request does not have to be based on a financial need.

A Child Waits Foundation
A Child Waits Foundation provides low interest loans for families who do not have any other option than to request a loan in order to proceed with international adoption.

Hebrew Free Loan Association
Hebrew Free Loan Association offers adoption loans (interest free) to Jewish families in northern California who demonstrate financial need and a strong desire to adopt a child.

Funds 4 Families
Find out more about home loans such as home equity plans, debt consolidation plans, and refinancing plans.

A Mother’s Love Fundraising
An adoptive mother is helping to plan fundraising events for prospective adoptive parents.

Community Fundraisers
Prospective adoptive families can address their need for help to their churches and other civic community organizations in their local area.

Employers Can Help

Ask your employer if he or she can help with adoption expenses. Or call Adoption and the Workplace at the National Adoption Center at (800) 862-3678 to find out how to request this help from your employer.

Bank Loans

Contact your bank for information on adoption loan programs available for prospective adoptive families.

Tax Deductions or Credits

Contact your tax consultant or the IRS for more information about Federal Tax Benefits for adoption (Up to $10,000), State Tax Credit, and of course, Dependency Exemption. Adoptive parents are eligible for federal and state dependency tax exemption for their adopted children.
